Shared capabilities include formation of complex queries (as in conceptual graphs), applying methods of connectivity analysis, path algebra, other algebraic and graph-theoretic methods (Sowa, 1988).
VAN capabilities are also comparable to those of Pathfinder, including conceptual clusterization, similarity measurement, other (Schvaneveldt, 1990).
VAN is compatible with other known methods; but stems from a different psychological foundation and offers a different perspective, along with a rich set of novel analytic and data visualization techniques inherent in the method. VAN also prepares the ground and makes possible application of other methods, as discussed in the next section.
